Scuola Grande di San Rocco guided tour

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is one of the greatest artistic masterpieces in Venice and one of the most intense sites of European Renaissance art. Declared a Scuola Grande by the Council of Ten in 1489, its primary mission was to assist the sick during plagues, under the protection of Saint Roch, invoked against the pestilence.

The Scuola survived the Napoleonic suppressions (1806), keeping its artistic heritage and identity intact. Today, it is universally famous for the pictorial cycle by Jacopo Tintoretto, created between 1564 and 1587.

Tintoretto’s cycle: over fifty masterpieces

Inside is preserved one of the greatest unified pictorial cycles in art history, consisting of over fifty works:

  • Lower Hall: episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary, with an intense and dynamic narrative
  • Upper Hall: large canvases dedicated to stories from the Old and New Testaments, which simultaneously celebrate the charitable activities of the Scuola
  • Sala dell’Albergo: on the ceiling, the famous Saint Roch in Glory, surrounded by a powerful theological vision; on the walls, the Allegories of the other Scuole Grandi of Venice

The dramatic force of the light, the bold compositions, and the narrative rhythm make the Scuola di San Rocco a true “Venetian Sistine Chapel”.
