Guided tour of Rovigo: historic heart among Venetian palaces and roses

Rovigo Classic

Let yourself be guided through the historic center of Rovigo, among Venetian architecture, noble palaces, and charming courtyards. An itinerary rich in art, literature, and spirituality, revealing the discreet voice of the City of Roses.

Rovigo and the heart of Polesine
Rovigo is a city of medieval origin, developed along a branch of the Adige in a borderland between water and land. Its historic core developed around the castle built in the 10th century by the bishop of Adria to control river traffic, and the first Cathedral dedicated to Saint Stephen.

In the following centuries, the city expanded beyond the river, enriched with churches, palaces, and squares that tell the story of the Este and Venetian dominations, still recognizable in the urban fabric today.
La Rotonda and Rovigo of the Serenissima
Following the ancient path of the medieval walls, you reach the Votive Temple of the Blessed Virgin of Help, known as “La Rotonda,” one of the city’s symbols. This building, in addition to its architectural value, houses important testimonies of Baroque art and tells the story of Rovigo during the rule of the Serenissima.

At the center of the main altar is the miraculous image of the Virgin, which for centuries has attracted pilgrims from all over the territory.
Churches, theaters, and palaces
Not far away are the church of San Francesco, with what remains of the ancient convent, and the Teatro Sociale, listed among the historic theaters of Italy for its long lyrical tradition, still alive in the city’s culture today.

Crossing Piazza Garibaldi, you arrive at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, dominated by the imposing Palazzo Roverella, built in the second half of the 15th century for a powerful Ferrarese family. Today, the palace houses a prestigious art gallery and important temporary exhibitions, significantly contributing to the city’s cultural life.
The museums and the history of the great rivers
Exiting Porta San Bortolo, near the ancient Jewish quarter, you reach the Museo dei Grandi Fiumi, housed in the former Benedictine monastery of San Bortolo. The exhibition path takes the visitor through the history of civilizations that developed along the Po and Adige rivers, from the Bronze Age to the Renaissance.

This visit allows for an understanding of the identity of Polesine, often defined as a small “Venetian Mesopotamia,” shaped over the centuries by water and human ingenuity.
The territory: villas, abbeys, and villages
The history of the province of Rovigo extends well beyond the capital.
Fratta Polesine and the Palladian legacy
In the territory of Fratta Polesine, remains of pile-dwelling villages from the Bronze Age have been found. Here, many centuries later, Andrea Palladio designed one of his masterpieces, Villa Badoer, a perfect example of Renaissance architecture set in the rural landscape.
Badia Polesine and Lendinara
In Badia Polesine stands the Abbey of Vangadizza, a spiritual and cultural center of great importance in the Middle Ages.

Lendinara, nicknamed “Athens of Polesine,” preserves a rich artistic and religious heritage, including the Sanctuary of Pilastrello, still a place of devotion today.
The Po Delta, between land and water
The history of Polesine is also the history of man’s continuous struggle against water. This relationship emerges strongly in the Po Delta, where the boundary between land and sea is thin and constantly changing.

Embankments, fishing valleys, lagoons, and inlets create a unique landscape, a natural habitat for numerous bird species and a place of great environmental and cultural value. Visiting the Delta means understanding the deep connection between nature, work, and history.
