Padua, a city of history and knowledge
Padua is a city with an ancient history and a complex identity, encapsulated in stories, symbols, and traditions that have defined its character over the centuries. It is known as the city of the three “withouts”:
the Saint without a name, because for Paduans, Saint Anthony is simply “the Saint”;
the Café without doors, referring to the historic Caffè Pedrocchi, which was once always open;
the Meadow without grass, the famous Prato della Valle, one of the largest squares in Europe.
But Padua is also the city of Antenor and competes with Rome for the title of one of the oldest foundations, with its roots deep in Paleo-Venetian culture.
A city of water and porticoes
Founded on a bend of the Brenta River and today crossed by the Bacchiglione, Padua preserves numerous evocative views linked to water. At the same time, it is an ideal city to visit in any season thanks to its over twelve kilometers of porticoes, which offer shelter and urban continuity with diverse and fascinating architectural styles.
Roman and Medieval legacy
Important evidence remains from the Roman era, such as the remains of the ancient Arena and the artifacts preserved in the Eremitani Civic Museums, which provide access to the Scrovegni Chapel, home to Giotto’s famous fresco cycle, considered a turning point in the history of Western art.
The Middle Ages and the communal era left behind three sets of walls, towers, churches, and civil buildings such as the Palazzo della Ragione, for centuries the seat of the court and today a large covered market. Surrounding it are Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Frutti, the commercial heart of the city, and Piazza dei Signori, linked to the rule of the da Carrara family.
Padua, city of science
Padua is also known as the city of “great doctors.” Its University, founded in 1222, is the second oldest in Italy and has hosted fundamental figures in European scientific history, including Galileo Galilei.
Here you will find the oldest permanent Anatomical Theatre in Europe, the oldest existing university Botanical Garden (now a UNESCO World Heritage site), and the record of the first woman in the world to receive a degree, Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia.
From the twentieth century to contemporary architecture
The history of Padua continues into the modern and contemporary eras, with examples of avant-garde architecture such as Daniel Libeskind’s monument dedicated to the victims of the Twin Towers in New York, a sign of a city that continues to dialogue with the present.
The province and the landscape
Alongside the city, the province of Padua offers an equally rich and varied heritage.
Walled cities and historic villages
Locations such as Cittadella, Monselice, Este, and Montagnana tell the story of a fortified Veneto, made of walls, castles, and well-preserved historic centers. Villages like Arquà Petrarca maintain an intact atmosphere, linked to literary and humanistic history.
Nature, spas, and spirituality
The Euganean Hills Regional Park offers fascinating nature itineraries, while the spas of Abano and Montegrotto represent a millennial tradition of wellness and care. The picture is completed by important religious complexes such as Praglia Abbey, a place of silence and spirituality.
A complete guided experience
Guided tours in Padua and its province allow you to traverse centuries of history in a clear and engaging way, adapting the itineraries to different interests: artistic, historical, scientific, and naturalistic. Each visit is designed to offer an informed and harmonious interpretation of the territory.
