Scoletta del Santo
Guided tour of the Scoletta del Santo in Padua
The Scoletta del Santo is located next to the Oratory of St. George, in the heart of the Antonian area of Padua. It is the historic seat of the Archconfraternity of Saint Anthony, an association of lay faithful and clerics founded in 1232 under the spiritual guidance of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual.
From its origins, the confraternity had the task of promoting the cult of Saint Anthony of Padua and supporting charitable and religious activities linked to the Basilica of the Saint.
Architecture and interior spaces
The building, small in size but of great historical and artistic value, is organized over two levels:
- Ground floor: the small church, an intimate space intended for prayer and confraternal functions
- First floor: the Prior’s Hall, accessible via a monumental staircase, the true artistic heart of the Scoletta
The early 16th-century pictorial cycle
In the early years of the 16th century, the Prior’s Hall was decorated with a vast cycle of frescoes dedicated to the life and miracles of Saint Anthony, entrusted to some of the most important painters active in the Veneto region.
The artists involved include:
- Girolamo dal Santo
- Bartolomeo Montagna
- Domenico Campagnola
- Jacopo da Verona
- Antonio Buttafuoco
Above all, the exceptional presence of Tiziano Vecellio (Titian) stands out, author of three extraordinary early frescoes, painted in 1511, which represent one of the highest points of Renaissance painting in Padua.
Titian’s early masterpieces
In the Scoletta del Santo, it is possible to admire:
- The Miracle of Saint Anthony making a newborn speak
- The Jealous Husband stabbing his wife
- Saint Anthony reattaching a young man’s foot
These works already demonstrate the narrative power, the dynamism of the figures, and the masterful use of color that would make Titian one of the greatest painters in European art history.
