Santa Corona Church

Guided tour of the Church of Santa Corona in Vicenza

The Church of Santa Corona is one of the most important religious buildings in Vicenza and represents a fundamental stop in the city’s artistic and cultural itineraries.

The church was built in 1260 to house a thorn from Christ’s crown, a relic donated by King Louis IX of France (Saint Louis) to the Bishop of Vicenza, Bartolomeo da Breganze, in recognition of the diplomatic aid provided during the Crusades.

History and architecture

Built in the Gothic style, Santa Corona bears witness to the deep connection between Vicenza and the major political and religious events of the European Middle Ages. Today, the church is owned by the Municipality of Vicenza, which has overseen a recent and meticulous restoration, including it in the city’s museum circuit.

The liturgical function is maintained with the celebration of Mass on Saturday afternoons at 5:30 PM, while on other days the building is primarily dedicated to cultural visits.

Artworks preserved

The interior of the church preserves an artistic heritage of extraordinary value, featuring works by some of the most important masters of Italian painting:

  • Giovanni Bellini
  • Paolo Veronese
  • Corberelli Florentine workshop
  • Marcello Fogolino

This wealth of art makes the Church of Santa Corona a true sacred art gallery, essential for understanding the evolution of art between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the Veneto region.
