Olympic Theatre Vicenza – guided tour

The guided tour of the Olympic Theatre in Vicenza leads to the discovery of one of the greatest masterpieces of world theatrical architecture and an absolute symbol of the Italian Renaissance. Located in the heart of the city, the theatre represents the artistic testament of Andrea Palladio and is recognized as the only permanent Renaissance theatre in existence in the world.

The masterpiece of Palladio and Scamozzi

The Olympic Theatre was designed by Andrea Palladio in 1580, the year of his death. The construction was completed by his son Silla Palladio and especially by the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi, who created the extraordinary wooden perspective scenography, capable of creating the illusion of a city opening beyond the stage.

The theatre was inaugurated in 1585 with the performance of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, set in the city of Thebes. The fixed scenography, still visible today, constitutes one of the highest examples of the application of Renaissance perspective.
