In Stra stands one of the most imposing and spectacular Venetian villas: Villa Pisani, also known as Villa Nazionale Pisani or the “little Versailles” for the vastness of the complex and the richness of its decorative features.
The villa was built at the beginning of the 18th century at the behest of Alvise Pisani, future Doge of the Most Serene Republic of Venice. From its construction, Villa Pisani became a place of political and diplomatic representation, hosting crowned heads and prominent European figures.
The piano nobile and the Ballroom
The guided tour focuses primarily on the monumental interiors of the piano nobile, where sumptuously decorated halls follow one another, created by some of the finest artists of 18th-century Venice.
The heart of the villa is the imposing Ballroom, famous for its ceiling frescoed by Giambattista Tiepolo, one of the greatest masterpieces of 18th-century European painting. The fresco, of extraordinary breadth and scenic complexity, represents the triumph of the Pisani family and constitutes one of the highest achievements of Baroque illusionistic decoration.
The monumental park and the labyrinth
The historic park of Villa Pisani, extending over ten hectares, has been awarded “Most Beautiful Park in Italy”. Within it are numerous architectural and landscape elements of great interest:
- the fishpond
- the icehouse
- the panoramic exedra
- the famous labyrinth, one of the very few still preserved in Italy
The garden represents a perfect example of Baroque landscape, designed to amaze and guide the visitor through a symbolic and spectacular journey.
