Villa Foscari La Malcontenta along the Riviera del Brenta
Villa Foscari, known as La Malcontenta, stands along the Naviglio del Brenta and is reflected in the water with a solemn façade reminiscent of an ancient temple. Designed between 1556 and 1559 by Andrea Palladio for the brothers Nicolò Foscari and Alvise Foscari, it is the only Palladian villa built along the Brenta, making it a unique example among the Venetian Villas.
An emblematic example of a “villa-temple,” La Malcontenta is characterized by its monumental hexastyle Ionic pronaos, which evokes the classical architectural models studied by Palladio during his stays in Rome.
Frescoed interiors and spatial organization
The guided tour leads to the piano nobile, the heart of the residence, where visitors admire sixteenth-century frescoes with mythological subjects, also inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The decorations are attributed to important sixteenth-century painters, including Giambattista Zelotti, Giambattista Franco, and Bernardino India.
The spacious central hall, illuminated by a large thermal window, recalls the architecture of Roman baths, a clear reference to Palladio’s classical studies. The lateral rooms are arranged symmetrically around the central space, giving the building a surprisingly modern layout for its time.
The garden and historical transformations
Originally the villa was flanked by service buildings such as a guesthouse, oratory, and barchessa, demolished during the nineteenth century. Today the property, privately owned, is surrounded by a large, simple, and essential garden that enhances the formal purity of the architecture and its relationship with the riverside landscape.
