Villa Emo Capodilista “La Montecchia” – tour details
Villa Emo Capodilista, known as La Montecchia, is a refined Venetian villa situated on a small hill near the Euganean Hills. The name itself derives from the Latin term monticula, indicating the slightly elevated position that provides a striking view of the surrounding landscape.
The villa was designed in 1568 by the painter and architect Dario Varotari for the noble Capodilista family, who still own it today. The building was conceived as a hunting and leisure lodge, intended for the family’s country retreats, and represents an original and rare example in the panorama of sixteenth-century Venetian villas.
The structure features a square plan with four identical facades, characterized by elegant loggias and a distinctive architectural crown with volutes and pinnacles, decorative elements that give the villa a scenic and recognizable appearance.
In addition to the architectural design, Dario Varotari also oversaw the interior pictorial decoration, collaborating with Antonio Vassillachi. The frescoes, rich in colors and symbolism, draw inspiration from mythological themes and the history of the Capodilista family, offering visitors a refined visual narrative typical of Venetian Renaissance culture.
The guided tour provides insight into the villa’s role within the system of villas and castles along the ancient Castellana, Noalese, and Miranese routes, exploring the connection between architecture, territory, and sixteenth-century aristocratic life.
