Guided Tours of Villa Cordellina Lombardi
Villa Cordellina Lombardi – Tour Details
Villa Cordellina Lombardi is one of the most important 18th-century villas in the Vicenza area, located in Montecchio Maggiore. It represents a perfect example of a representative residence from the Age of Enlightenment, where architecture, painting, and garden harmoniously interact.
The villa was built at the behest of the Venetian Carlo Cordellina, a jurist of Vicenza origin who had settled in Venice. Having inherited the family lands, Cordellina commissioned the project to architect Giorgio Massari, one of the greatest interpreters of 18th-century Venetian architecture.
Architecture Between Palladio and the Enlightenment
The villa’s façade is conceived as a classical temple of clear Palladian inspiration, a direct homage to the teachings of Andrea Palladio, an essential reference point for architecture in the Vicenza area.
Unlike 16th-century Palladian villas, however, Villa Cordellina was not built as an agricultural estate. For this reason:
- the guest quarters
- the farm buildings
- the stables
are separate structures, organized independently and not integrated into the main building with long arcaded wings, marking a clear evolution from the 16th-century villa-farm.
Giambattista Tiepolo’s Pictorial Masterpiece
The artistic heart of the villa is the large central hall, frescoed by Giambattista Tiepolo, the greatest Venetian painter of the 18th century.
Here Tiepolo created two monumental episodes from ancient history, dedicated to Scipio Africanus and Alexander the Great, subjects very dear to:
- the 16th-century Humanists, who had already celebrated them in numerous Venetian villas
- the Enlightenment thinkers, for whom these figures embodied civic virtues, rationality, and moral greatness
The iconographic choice perfectly reflects the cultured and progressive outlook of the patron Carlo Cordellina.
The French Garden and Contemporary Uses
Around the villa extends a splendid French garden, enriched by:
- ornamental citrus groves
- regular geometries
- perspective axes that enhance the façade
Today Villa Cordellina Lombardi is owned by the Province of Vicenza and is used as a venue for:
- conferences and lectures
- institutional and cultural events
- film productions, including filming for Bollywood movies, thanks to its strong scenic appeal
