Villa Barchessa Valmarana in Mira – tour details

The Barchessa Valmarana is a refined historic 17th-century residence located in the heart of the Riviera del Brenta, along one of the most picturesque stretches of the Naviglio.

The villa was commissioned by Prospero Valmarana, Sage of Trade for the Republic of Venice. The building we can visit today was originally part of a much larger complex, of which the barchesse remain—the side wings intended for agricultural and service activities.

From agricultural function to noble guesthouse

During the 18th century, the Barchessa was transformed into a representative guesthouse, also serving as a ballroom for events and receptions. It was during this period that the interiors were enriched with a cycle of frescoes attributed to the school of Tiepolo, a testament to late-Baroque Venetian decorative taste.

The central body of the villa was unfortunately demolished during the 19th century, yet the monumentality of the barchesse remained intact, and they are now the main feature of the entire architectural complex.

Architecture and monumental facade

The facade of Barchessa Valmarana is distinguished by its portico with double columns, an element that gives the building a solemn and scenographic appearance, typical of the grand Venetian holiday residences along the Brenta.

The balance between architecture, agricultural function, and noble representation makes this villa a particularly interesting example of the evolution of the Venetian villa between the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Italian garden

The guided tour also includes a walk through the extensive Italian garden, featuring:

  • a rich historic rose garden
  • Baroque sculptures distributed along the paths
  • green spaces that maintain the original layout

An ideal setting to understand the relationship between the villa, the landscape, and aristocratic country life.
