Guided tours of Catajo Castle in Battaglia Terme
Catajo Castle – tour details
The Catajo Castle is one of the most imposing monumental complexes in Veneto, located in Battaglia Terme, along the 13th-century Battaglia Canal. With over 350 rooms, the Catajo represents a unique architectural blend of castle, noble palace, and imperial residence.
From military residence to imperial palace
The castle was built starting in the 16th century at the behest of Pio Enea I degli Obizzi, a valiant man of arms linked to the Republic of Venice. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex was expanded and transformed, taking on an increasingly monumental character.
In the 19th century, Catajo Castle became the ducal palace of the Habsburg-Este family, in exile from Modena, and subsequently the imperial summer residence of the Habsburgs, Emperors of Austria. This long historical stratification makes the Catajo a place of extraordinary cultural and symbolic value.
The noble floor and Renaissance frescoes
The guided tour focuses on the noble floor, where it is possible to admire the spectacular rooms frescoed in the 16th century by Giovan Battista Zelotti, a Veronese painter and one of the most important interpreters of the Venetian Renaissance style.
The pictorial cycle celebrates the military virtues and glory of the Obizzi family, transforming the castle into a true narrative in images, designed to amaze and impress guests and visitors.
The historic park
The visit also includes the park of Catajo Castle, an essential element of the complex, which helps convey the idea of a grand representative residence immersed in the landscape of the Euganean Hills.
