Fratta Polesine, Badia Polesine, Lendinara – Guided Tour

The guided tour of Fratta Polesine, Badia Polesine, Lendinara offers a cultural itinerary through the heart of Polesine, discovering Palladian villas, sites of Risorgimento history, and important religious and civic centers. The route provides insight into the identity of a territory often little known but extremely rich in artistic, political, and social heritage.

Fratta Polesine – Palladian Villas and Civic Memory

The guided tour begins in Fratta Polesine, renowned for its extraordinary Venetian villas. The focal point of the itinerary is Villa Badoer, a masterpiece by Andrea Palladio and the only UNESCO site in the province of Rovigo. Built in 1556 for the management of the properties of Lucietta Loredan, wife of Francesco Badoer, the villa is striking for its harmonious proportions and the scenic barchesse that embrace the garden and the visitor. The pronaos, conceived as a small stage, introduces interiors entirely frescoed by the painter Giallo Fiorentino, creator of an original decorative cycle rich in inventiveness.

Inside the entrance barchessa, there is also an archaeological collection dedicated to the Bronze Age, a period when Fratta Polesine was a significant center for amber working, testifying to the ancient vitality of the territory.

Next to Villa Badoer stands Villa Grimani Molin Avezzù, built in the 16th century by the Palladian school for the Grimani family. Still a private property today, the villa opens its completely frescoed and furnished rooms to the public. In the 19th century, it was also a private meeting place for the Carbonari, a clandestine political movement very active in Polesine during Austrian rule.

Fratta Polesine was indeed one of the most important centers of the Carboneria in the Polesine territory. The itinerary may include the route of the “Carboneria villas”, belonging to nobles and bourgeois members of the movement, harshly repressed in 1818 with arrests and deportations, often to the Spielberg prison.

The town is also the birthplace of Giacomo Matteotti, a staunch opponent of fascism. It is possible to visit Matteotti’s birthplace, still completely furnished, which houses rich historical documentation dedicated to his education, political career, and tragic personal story.

Lendinara – Art, Architecture, and Devotion

The itinerary continues to Lendinara, an elegant center of Polesine characterized by an orderly urban layout. The guided tour includes Piazza Risorgimento, the Town Hall, and the historic Caffè Maggiore, flanked by two 14th-century towers. Among the most significant architectural works is Palazzo Dolfin Marchiori, designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi, and Parco Jappelli, an example of 19th-century landscape taste.

The tour includes the 18th-century Cathedral, rich in marble altars, and the Sanctuary of Madonna del Pilastrello, an important place of popular devotion. Inside is preserved the celebrated “Votive Ascension” by Paolo Veronese, along with the water source believed to possess healing powers.

Badia Polesine – Theater, Museums, and Abbey

The guided tour concludes in Badia Polesine, a center of great historical importance. In Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II stand the Town Hall and the magnificent Teatro Sociale of Badia Polesine, known as the little Fenice for its 19th-century elegance. In the theater foyer is preserved the remarkable Balzan Collection, comprising 49 canvases from the late 19th and early 20th centuries by important Italian painters.

In the town center, it is also possible to visit the Baruffaldi Civic Museum and the monumental remains of the Vangadizza Abbey, burial place of the founders of the House of Este, preserved in majestic early medieval sarcophagi.

The guided tour of Fratta Polesine, Badia Polesine, Lendinara thus offers a rich and articulated itinerary, capable of combining Palladian architecture, political history, sacred art, and civic identity of Polesine.
