Ca’ D’oro

Ca’ d’Oro: guided tour of the picturesque Venetian palace, featuring Gothic architecture and great masterpieces, to discover secrets and details.

Ca’ d’Oro guided tour

The Ca’ d’Oro, overlooking the Grand Canal, represents—together with the Doge’s Palace—one of the highest expressions of Venetian Gothic architecture with Oriental influences. Its name derives from the ancient splendor of the façade, originally enriched with gilding and polychrome decoration that made it shimmer in the light reflected from the water.

History and architecture

The palace features an asymmetrical façade of extraordinary elegance, with marble tracery, open loggias, and a refined interplay between solids and voids, typical of 15th-century Venetian architecture. Over the centuries the building underwent numerous transformations, some of which altered its original appearance.

It was thanks to the intervention of the last owner, Giorgio Franchetti, that Ca’ d’Oro was restored and brought back as closely as possible to its former splendor. Upon his death, the palace was donated to the Italian State and in 1927 became a public museum, now known as the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca’ d’Oro.
