Palazzo Della Ragione Padua Guided Tour

Palazzo della Ragione is one of the most recognizable symbols of Padua. Built from the 13th century as the seat of municipal institutions and the city tribunal, it stands in the beating heart of the city, among the historic Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza della Frutta, and Piazza dei Signori, which for over eight centuries have been the center of Padua’s economic and social life.

Upon arriving in the squares, the building’s mass immediately strikes you with its wide loggias and especially the imposing inverted ship’s hull roof, supported by 116 wooden ribs: a true masterpiece of medieval engineering, unique in Europe for its size and structural design.

The historic market beneath the Salone

On the ground floor of the palace and in the adjacent squares lies one of the oldest covered markets in Europe, continuously active for over 800 years. Here you will find the traditional shops of the “becheri” (butchers) and the “casolini” (cheese sellers), along with fruit and vegetable stalls that still enliven the historic center daily.

The Salone and the medieval astrological cycle

The heart of the guided tour is the Salone of Palazzo della Ragione, located on the first floor: an enormous suspended hall nearly 80 meters long and approximately 30 meters wide, decorated with one of the rarest medieval astrological cycles to have survived to this day.

The pictorial cycle draws inspiration from the theories of Pietro d’Abano, a physician and natural philosopher who taught at the University of Padua in the early 14th century. The frescoes depict the passage of time through:

  • the twelve months of the year
  • the zodiac signs
  • agricultural and artisan activities
  • the relationship between human actions and astral influences

According to sources, Giotto also worked on the frescoes, but the original cycle was destroyed in a fire in 1420. The paintings visible today are the result of restoration work by artists such as Nicolò Miretto, Stefano da Ferrara, Jacopo da Montagnana, and Domenico Campagnola.

Works and curiosities inside the Salone

Inside the Salone are preserved:

  • a large wooden horse from 1466, created for a city joust
  • the famous Stone of Shame, linked to a tradition attributed to Saint Anthony: insolvent debtors could avoid prison, but had to undergo public humiliation, symbolically remaining “in linen breeches”
