Villa Almerico Capra “La Rotonda” – tour details

Located on the outskirts of Vicenza, about a 5-minute walk from Villa Valmarana ai Nani, stands Villa Almerico Capra, universally known as La Rotonda.
It is the first suburban villa conceived by Andrea Palladio and is considered one of the most influential architectural works of all time.

Its fame has crossed European borders: La Rotonda has inspired generations of architects and is known to have influenced Thomas Jefferson in the design of the White House in Washington.

The masterpiece of Palladian symmetry

Villa La Rotonda is Palladio’s most famous work and the ultimate example of architectural symmetry from the Renaissance. The name derives from the clear reference to the Pantheon, from which Palladio adopted the idea of the central plan.

The villa stands on a hill, isolated and dominant, and is characterized by:

  • four nearly identical facades, each with a temple pronaos
  • a lowered central dome, a revolutionary element for residential architecture
  • perfect harmony between architecture and landscape

This layout allows the villa to be observed and admired from every side, according to the ideal of perfection sought by its designer.

The interiors and the central hall

At the center of the villa lies the large circular hall, the symbolic and architectural heart of the building. The interiors were initially frescoed by the Maganza workshop and later by the French painter Louis Dorigny, who was very active in Vicenza at the beginning of the 18th century.

The frescoes enhance the verticality of the space and interact with the natural light filtering from the dome, creating an atmosphere of great solemnity.

The landscape and the Bacchiglione river

The villa faces the bends of the Bacchiglione, once an important commercial waterway traveled by horse-drawn burci (traditional boats) that connected Vicenza to Padua and Venice.
The relationship between architecture and the territory is an integral part of the Palladian project: La Rotonda does not dominate the landscape but engages with it in a balanced and rational way.
