The Cathedral Baptistery<\/strong> is located next to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta<\/strong> and is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist<\/strong>. Its construction began in the 12th century<\/strong>, but the building took on its current appearance in the second half of the 14th century<\/strong>, when it was transformed into the mausoleum of the Da Carrara family<\/strong>, lords of Padua. <\/p>\n The transformation was commissioned by Fina Buzzacarini<\/strong>, widow of Francesco il Vecchio da Carrara<\/strong>, as a celebratory monument to the Carrarese dynasty.<\/p>\n Between 1375 and 1378<\/strong>, the Florentine-born painter Giusto de’ Menabuoi<\/strong>, court artist to the Carraresi, was commissioned to create one of the most extraordinary pictorial cycles of the European 14th century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In approximately 200 working days<\/strong>, the artist decorated over 700 square meters of frescoed surfaces<\/strong>, depicting a monumental narrative of Sacred History<\/strong>, from Genesis to Revelation<\/strong>.
